The Phra Nang Beach in Krabi with the picturesque Phra Nang Cave is one of the most famous beaches in Krabi and at the same time one of the most beautiful places in Thailand. The main attraction of the beach is the Phra Nang Cave, often called Princess Cave, where you can find a very special fertility shrine.

Die Hauptattraktion des Strandes ist die Phra Nang-Höhle, oft auch Prinzessinnenhöhle genannt, in der sich ein ganz besonderes Fruchtbarkeitsheiligtum befindet.

Many visitors to Phra Nang Beach simply go there to soak up the sun, laze on the white sand and admire the stunning Krabi scenery. Flanked to its left and right by the neighbouring beaches of East and West Railay, Phra Nang commands an enviable location on the tip of the headland looking out on the emerald expanse of the Andaman Sea. However, some local people visiting Phra Nang aren’t just there to admire the surroundings. They are there to make offerings to Phra Nang herself, the Princess Goddess who is believed to reside in the cave underneath the cliff at one end of the beach. The legend and mystery of Phra Nang goes back many centuries and the belief in the Princess Goddess still remains strong amongst local people.

Phra Nang Cave (Princess Cave as it is sometimes shown on maps) is a sacred place and should be treated with respect by anybody visiting there. Fishermen and boatmen still make offerings in the form of incense and flowers to ensure a safe journey. More curious though, are the phallic symbols or lingams that are in prominence at the entrance to the cave.

Die Phra Nang-Höhle (die Höhle der Prinzessin, wie sie manchmal auf Karten angezeigt wird) ist ein heiliger Ort und sollte von jedem, der sie besucht, mit Respekt behandelt werden. Lingams are a symbol of the Hindu god Shiva and are associated with fertility and virility. In Thailand, Hindu and animist beliefs are incorporated alongside Buddhism. Over the centuries, Phra Nang cave has become associated with fertility and the lingams placed here take the form of carved wooden penises. Local folklore says that if somebody carves a wooden lingam and releases it at high tide anywhere along the Krabi coast, it will eventually end up in Phra Nang cave.
THE LEGEND OF PHRA NANG
So who is Phra Nang? There are different theories about Phra Nang and how she came to be associated with this particular cave in Krabi. One legend says that an Indian princess was killed in a shipwreck offshore and her ghost occupied the cave. Another story says that Phra Nang was the wife of a local fisherman. One day her husband set out to sea but never returned. According to this story, the woman lived out the rest of her years living in the cave and looking out to sea waiting for her husband to come back.

Another version tells the story of a beautiful maiden who lived in Krabi centuries ago. Her captivating beauty attracted suitors from all around, but she rejected them all. One lovelorn individual reacted angrily when his marriage proposal was rejected and he tried to kidnap the lady, but she was rescued by a brave local man who came to her aid. In appreciation, the lady agreed to marry her rescuer. On the date of the wedding the groom arrived with the traditional dowry, but there would be no wedding. A group of jealous men were there to fight with the would-be-husband. In the fighting that ensued a hermit who had been living in a nearby cave appeared on the scene. His attempts to stop the violence were ignored and he utilised his magical powers to transform the scene into stone. The maiden became Phra Nang Cave. The groom became Chicken Island. Other men involved in the brawl were turned into the various nearby islands including Poda Island.

HOW TO GET TO PHRA NANG CAVE
From Ao Nang Beach or Nopparat Thara beach, longtail boats act as shred taxis and can can take you directly to Phra Nang Beach. The fares are set by the Krabi Longtail Boat Association. The current fare is 100 Baht per person one way (200 Baht return). Buy your boat ticket at the official ticket counters at either end of Ao Nang Beach or at the southern end of Nopparat Thara Beach. Longtail boat drivers will usually wait until they have a minimum of 8 passengers before departing. Journey time is a little over 10 minutes.

Phra Nang Beach and the cave can also be accessed via East or West Railay. If you arrive at West Railay you will need to follow the walkway through to East Railay and then follow the path along the beach and around the base of the cliff (towards the Rayavadee Resort) until you reach Phra Nang Beach.

Un'altra versione racconta la storia di una bellissima fanciulla che visse a Krabi secoli fa. La sua bellezza accattivante ha attirato corteggiatori da tutto il mondo, ma li ha respinti tutti. Un individuo innamorato ha reagito con rabbia quando la sua proposta di matrimonio è stata respinta e ha cercato di rapire la signora, ma è stata salvata da un coraggioso uomo del posto che è venuto in suo aiuto. In segno di apprezzamento, la signora ha accettato di sposare il suo soccorritore. Nella data del matrimonio lo sposo arrivava con la tradizionale dote, ma non ci sarebbero state nozze. Un gruppo di uomini gelosi era lì per combattere con l'aspirante marito. Nel combattimento che ne seguì apparve sulla scena un eremita che viveva in una grotta vicina. I suoi tentativi di fermare la violenza furono ignorati e utilizzò i suoi poteri magici per trasformare la scena in pietra. La fanciulla divenne la grotta di Phra Nang. Lo sposo è diventato Chicken Island. Altri uomini coinvolti nella rissa sono stati trasformati nelle varie isole vicine tra cui l'isola di Poda.


COME ARRIVARE ALLA GROTTA DI PHRA NANG

Dalla spiaggia di Ao Nang o dalla spiaggia di Nopparat Thara, le barche a coda lunga fungono da taxi shred e possono portarti direttamente alla spiaggia di Phra Nang. Le tariffe sono stabilite dalla Krabi Longtail Boat Association. La tariffa attuale è di 100 baht a persona a tratta (200 baht andata e ritorno). DIE LEGENDE VON PHRA NANG


Wer ist also Phra Nang? Es gibt mehrere Theorien über Phra Nang und wie es mit dieser speziellen Höhle in Krabi in Verbindung gebracht wurde. Eine Legende besagt, dass eine indische Prinzessin bei einem Schiffbruch vor der Küste getötet wurde und ihr Geist die Höhle besetzte. Eine andere Geschichte besagt, dass Phra Nang die Frau eines einheimischen Fischers war. Eines Tages brach ihr Mann zum Meer auf, kehrte aber nie zurück. Laut dieser Geschichte lebte die Frau den Rest ihrer Jahre in der Höhle und blickte auf das Meer, während sie auf die Rückkehr ihres Mannes wartete.


Eine andere Version erzählt die Geschichte eines schönen jungen Mädchens, das vor Jahrhunderten in Krabi lebte. Ihre bezaubernde Schönheit hat Verehrer aus der ganzen Welt angezogen, aber sie hat sie alle abgestoßen. Eine verliebte Person reagierte verärgert, als ihr Heiratsantrag abgelehnt wurde, und versuchte, die Dame zu entführen, aber sie wurde von einem tapferen Mann aus der Gegend gerettet, der ihr zu Hilfe kam. Als Anerkennung stimmte die Dame zu, ihren Retter zu heiraten. Am Hochzeitstag kam der Bräutigam mit der traditionellen Mitgift, aber es würde keine Hochzeit geben. Eine Gruppe eifersüchtiger Männer war dort, um mit dem Möchtegern-Ehemann zu kämpfen. Im folgenden Kampf erschien ein Einsiedler, der in einer nahe gelegenen Höhle lebte, auf der Bildfläche. Seine Versuche, die Gewalt zu stoppen, wurden ignoriert und er benutzte seine magischen Kräfte, um die Szene in Stein zu verwandeln. Das Mädchen wurde zur Phra Nang-Höhle. Aus dem Bräutigam wurde Chicken Island. Andere an der Schlägerei beteiligte Männer wurden auf verschiedene benachbarte Inseln gebracht, darunter die Insel Poda.


WIE MAN ZUR PHRA NANG HÖHLE KOMMT

Von Ao Nang Beach oder Nopparat Thara Beach aus fungieren Longtail-Boote als Shred-Taxis und bringen dich direkt zum Phra Nang Beach. Die Preise werden von der Krabi Longtail Boat Association festgelegt. Der aktuelle Preis beträgt 100 Baht pro Person und Strecke (200 Baht Hin- und Rückfahrt). Kaufen Sie Ihr Bootsticket an den offiziellen Ticketschaltern an beiden Enden von Ao Nang Beach oder am südlichen Ende von Nopparat Thara Beach. Longtail-Bootsfahrer warten normalerweise, bis sie mindestens 8 Passagiere haben, bevor sie losfahren. Die Fahrzeit beträgt etwas mehr als 10 Minuten.




Phra Nang Beach und Cave sind auch über Eastern oder Western Railay erreichbar.
